Payment terms were not built for a fleet that runs every week
Broker payment terms of 30 to 60 days work fine for the broker. For a carrier covering fuel, insurance, and payroll every week, that gap is where operations break.
30 to 60 day payment terms
Most brokers pay invoices on 30 to 60 day terms. Fuel, tags, insurance, and payroll do not wait that long for the same load.
Fuel is due before the check clears
Diesel costs hit your card the day you deliver. The invoice for that same load will not turn into cash for weeks.
Growth stalls without cash on hand
Adding a truck or taking a bigger load means covering costs today against revenue that lands next month.
NOA and broker paperwork nobody has time for
Notice of assignment, broker verification, and invoice submission take hours you do not have between loads.
Banks were not built for freight
Traditional lenders see thin margins and inconsistent invoicing. Approval is slow, if it comes at all.
One slow-paying broker can sink a week
A single broker running 45 days behind can leave a small fleet unable to make payroll on time.
Turn a delivered load into cash, not a wait
Factoring is simple in plain English: you sell an unpaid invoice to a factoring company for a small fee, and get paid now instead of waiting on the broker.
Haul and deliver the load
Run the load as you normally would. Nothing about how you dispatch or drive changes.
Submit the invoice
Upload the rate confirmation, BOL, and invoice through your partner's online portal. Takes a few minutes.
Broker and invoice are verified
Your factoring partner confirms the broker's credit and the paperwork, then approves the invoice for funding.
Funds land same day or next day
Approved invoices are funded same day or next day, minus the factoring fee. No waiting on the broker.
An honest look at both options
Neither option is universally better. Your matched partner will walk you through which one fits your broker relationships and risk tolerance.
| Factor | Recourse | Non-Recourse |
|---|---|---|
| Rate | Lower, typically the cheaper starting point | Higher, priced for the added protection |
| Who carries broker credit risk | You do. If the broker never pays, you repay the advance. | The factoring company does, if the broker becomes insolvent. |
| Best fit | Carriers with strong, known broker relationships | Carriers running with newer or higher-risk brokers |
| Disputed freight | Not covered. Damaged, rejected, or disputed loads are excluded. | Also not covered. Non-recourse protects against non-payment, not disputes. |
| Approval speed | Typically faster to get started | May require a closer look at the broker before approval |

OngoingsupportFactoring pairs naturally with truck dispatch once cash flow is steady. If you do not have your own MC or DOT number yet, MC lease and authority placement gets you running under an active authority first, so there is an invoice to factor in the first place.

Questions carriers ask before they start factoring
What is freight factoring, in plain terms?
Factoring means selling an unpaid invoice to a factoring company in exchange for immediate cash, minus a small fee. Instead of waiting 30 to 60 days for a broker to pay, you get funded same day or next day and the factoring company collects from the broker directly.
Is MetaSys the factoring company?
MetaSys is an authorized partner of Riviera Finance, OTR Solutions, and RTS Financial, three of the largest freight factoring companies in the US. We are authorized to onboard carriers with all three and we match you to the one that fits your operation, then handle the paperwork so funding reaches you as fast as possible.
How fast do I actually get paid?
Once an invoice is approved, funding lands same day or next day depending on the partner and your submission time. Approved carriers can factor an invoice the same day they deliver.
What is the difference between recourse and non-recourse factoring?
With recourse factoring you get lower rates, but you are responsible for repaying the advance if the broker never pays. With non-recourse factoring the factoring company absorbs that credit risk if the broker becomes insolvent, and you pay a higher rate for that protection. Neither option covers a genuine dispute over the freight itself, such as damaged goods or a rejected load.
How much does factoring cost?
Rates start from 1.5% of the invoice value, with volume discounts available as your monthly invoice volume grows. Your exact rate depends on invoice volume, broker credit, and whether you choose recourse or non-recourse. This is confirmed during onboarding with your matched partner.
Do I have to factor every load?
No. Most of our partner programs let you choose which invoices to factor. There is no requirement to send every load through factoring once you are approved, so you can use it for the loads where cash flow matters most.
What is an NOA and why does it matter?
A Notice of Assignment tells a broker to pay the factoring company directly instead of you. MetaSys handles NOA filing and broker notification as part of onboarding, so brokers know exactly where to send payment from day one.
What do I need to get started?
Your MC number, DOT number, insurance certificate, W-9, and a recent rate confirmation or invoice. We use that information to match you with the right partner and start the application.
Is freight factoring better than a bank loan for trucking cash flow?
A bank loan adds debt you repay on a fixed schedule regardless of how your freight volume runs, and approval depends on credit history and collateral most new carriers do not have. Factoring is not a loan: you sell an already-earned invoice for immediate cash, so there is nothing to repay and no new debt on your books. It costs more per dollar than a low-rate bank loan would, but it is available to carriers a bank would turn away and it scales automatically with how much you haul.
How do freight factoring companies compare for small fleets?
Factoring companies differ mainly on rate, recourse versus non-recourse terms, and how much say you get over which invoices to factor. MetaSys is an authorized partner of Riviera Finance, OTR Solutions, and RTS Financial, three of the largest US freight factoring companies, and matches your fleet to whichever of the three fits your invoice volume and risk preference instead of asking you to shop three separate applications yourself.
